The Pennsylvania 529 College Savings Program provides a smart, tax advantaged way for families to save for college. Sponsored by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and administered by the Pennsylvania Treasury, the Pennsylvania 529 College Savings Program offers two plans: the PA 529 Guaranteed Savings Plan (GSP), in which growth is tied to the rate of college tuition inflation, and the PA 529 Investment Plan (IP), in which investment returns are determined by financial markets.
Enrollment
149,236 individuals are enrolled in the Pennsylvania 529 College Savings
Program – 91,043 in the GSP and 58,193 in the IP.
Since 1993, 207,042 people have participated in one or more of the Pennsylvania
529 College Savings Program plans.
Assets
Total assets (contributions plus earnings) equal $1.94 billion.
Since 1993, account holders have contributed over $2.2 billion combined
through both 529 plans.

Through the PA 529 GSP (inception date of 9/93):
Over 33,000 students (181,844 payments) have used their GSP accounts to attend colleges and career schools.
- Those students have attended over 1,600 different schools.
- $703.6 million has been paid from GSP accounts.
- Of that amount, more than $210.2 million has been growth.
- On average, families’ contributions have grown 43% in value from
contribution to use.
Through the PA 529 IP (inception date of 7/02):
Over 12,196 students (over 18,531 payments) have used their IP accounts to attend colleges and career schools.
Over $97 million has been paid from IP accounts.
- Of that amount, more than $9 million has been growth.
- On average, families’ contributions have grown 10% in value from
contribution to use.
